Text Box: Local Celeb Honored!

Four individuals have been
selected to be inducted this
year into Music For All’s
Bands of America (BOA)
Hall of Fame. One of 2012’s
inductees is none other than
Bay News 9’s traffic guy,
Chuck Henson! Aside from
being Bay News 9’s traffic
reporter, Chuck has also been
known as the “Voice” of Bands
Of America’s series of regional and the Grand National Marching Championships for the past 23 years. Chuck was introduced to Bands of America in 1984 as a Color Guard Clinician at the Summer Symposium. He also gave his service to BOA on two separate occasions as a member of the organization’s staff, serving as Manager of Public Relations in the Chicago-area office and also in sponsorship sales and
relationships after the organization’s relocation to Indianapolis. Chuck is an alumnus of the Boone County (Kentucky) High School band and Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. Chuck will be inducted during the Honor Band of America concert, Saturday evening, March 17 in Indianapolis during the Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha. Text Box: Exotic Wood!

Ibanez came out with their exotic wood series
of guitars several years ago and they just keep
getting better! This beauty is their Zebrawood
model and it is one of the nicest of all the
exotics. We took ours out of the carton
yesterday and the sales guys are already
drooling over it so I know it won’t last too
long! (remember, though, that we can
always get more!) The guitar features
a relatively large EW-style body
with unique EW-exclusive
cutaway for ease of play. The
neck is mahogany and both the
nut and bridge saddle are
Ivorex II, a very hard material
that results in crispy highs
and big, fat lows with great
sustain. The built-in pickup
is a B-Band UST and the
preamp sports a built-in
tuner and cool chorus effect.
The sound hole is graced by a
rosette of abalone which is stunning, as well as a triple line binding around the body. It’s a real gorgeous sounding AND looking instrument for less than $500! Next time you’re in, take a look or better yet, come down TO take a look! If you’re interested in a special instrument, you’ll like what you see! ♫

Text Box: “The Wrecking Crew”

“The Wrecking Crew” by
Kent Hartman highlights a
group of session musicians -
a posse of players, if you will,
that were prominent in the Los
Angeles music scene of the
1960’s. These very talented
studio musicians, although not
outrightly acknowledged to the
listening public at the time,
were responsible for creating
many of the top 40 hits from
that era that we ARE familiar
with. These hits include “Be My Baby”, “Good Vibrations”, “I Got You Babe”, “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “Light My Fire”, “California Dreamin’”, and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” In the book, Kent Hartman introduces the reader to this obscure part of the history of the music industry in numerous stories and anecdotes, exposing the REAL talent behind many classic rock ’n roll songs commonly attributed to groups like the Mamas and the Papas, Sonny and Cher, and lots of others. We get a glimpse into what it REALLY was like in the industry back then and I know you will find it an enjoyable, entertaining read. A documentary based on the book is making its way around the country … a glimpse of that can be found by clicking here!
Text Box: Teacher Of The Month!

February’s Teacher
Of The Month is
piano instructor,
Kathleen Turgeon.
Kathy hails from Ohio
but her family moved
here to St. Petersburg
in 1962. She is a
graduate of Dixie
Hollins High School,
where she played the
sousaphone in the marching band. For those of you in the know, Kathy recalls Bill Findeison coming and giving a helping hand with the marching shows to then band director Bob Drumm. From 1978—1982, while getting her music degree, Kathy worked at Lefter’s Music. She taught piano at the sheet music shop at the same time as one of our former teachers, Debbie Freeman, taught flute there. She has been teaching private piano lessons since 1978. Kathy has been a member of the Greater St. Petersburg Music Teachers Association and has served as President, Treasurer, and Secretary while in that organization. Kathy keeps current on teaching techniques by attending local, state, national, and world pedagogy conferences. She is well known in piano circles and is consistently called upon to judge both local and national competitions. When Kathy isn’t teaching, she likes to sew, knit and crochet, as well as cooking and gardening. We’re happy to have Kathy as part of the Bringe School of Music staff! ♫
Text Box: Rounder Update!

Last night’s Rounder rehearsal was at full strength, with those folks who
had skipped the prior week for Valentines Day joining us. Director Bill
Findeison dug right in to the meat of the music and lots of progress was
made in all sections. Along with the music were lots of announcements
regarding the upcoming performances and special events. The 30th
Anniversary Commemorative Tee-shirt was introduced to the members
and was warmly received. The tees are selling for $18 ($20 for XXL and
larger) and must be pre-paid and ordered in advance. Checks or cash will
be accepted. I will be coordinating this effort and am happy to take
orders at the rehearsals or at the store. Once the shirts arrive, they may be picked up at rehearsal or at Bringe Music. More to come next week! ♫
